Day 21: Set an intention

We are habitual beings. Trying to change our deep seated habits is like trying to change the direction of an ocean liner. It tends to be a slow process. However, if we don't set intentions for ourselves, we end up more subject to the fickle winds of our emotional states and the strong currents of our habits, rather than living as we would like to live. Intentions are not goals. We do not use them as something to measure ourselves against and evaluate all the ways we have not met our intention. They are like our north star, an unwavering place to which we can set our course. They are ideals that we can apply all day long. When I set an intention in the morning for how I want to be with my baby, I find I am more likely to be that way. Sometimes I track towards something I lacked the day before... patience, compassion, forgiveness. Sometimes it is based on our agenda and what it might require of me. Openness, beginner's mind, focus. Try setting an intention for yourself and keep an eye out for the moments where you can apply it, and notice when you do apply it. You may surprise yourself.
