We learn that in the beginning, our babies do not have the ability to filter out visual information, so they actually see more than adults. This can be incredibly overwhelming and overstimulating. Over time, they learn what is "important" for them to see, and filter out the rest. As adults, we have tons of filters that help us see what's important. These shortcuts keep us moving efficiently through our days. But what if we tried to again experience life with that beginner's mind? Suddenly, I am noticing how beautiful the contrast of the black telephone wires against the dusky sky are, because I find my baby is enamored with them. I am struck by the tinkling sound of a bell, because she giggles at its every shake. I pause at the back door to gaze out at our yard, because she loves this exercise. So find your beginner's mind. Intend to see the world anew, and notice what it brings you.
