Day 53: Yes, even the sound machine can be the object of our meditation

The sound machine has been an integral part of our sleep experience since day one. Recently, I have found myself longing for the days of pitch black silent sleeps that lasted through the night. The sound of ocean waves, rain on a windshield, air conditioner, and/or human shushing were starting to fray my nerves.

But one afternoon nap, after she battled sleep in my arms, and finally succumbed, I found myself stuck in a room with this maddening roar. Instead of resisting, I closed my eyes and invited the “wind storm” to rush through my body. I found, as I brought my full attention to that sound, that my body started tingling with the vibrations of it. It was soothing in a way that I imagined must be true for my babe, as soon as I gave in.

I invite you to sit with your sound machine and let the noise overtake you. Bring your whole awareness to the experience, noting the rise and fall, the subtleties as there are pitch changes or the loop begins again. Fall in love with each moment, even the annoying ones.
