Day 82: Find a Teacher

I have noticed I need constant reminders to hold the big picture in mind and consider how I want to be in the world, and how I want to be a role model for my baby. Not because I have any particular defect or because there’s anything wrong with me, but because it is hard to hold our ideals in our mind when we feel like we are swept away in the day to day demands of life.

I know this sense will not change as my baby grows, so it feels important to have someone in my life who holds the bigger picture up for me to consider, Who asks me the most important questions- Are you being your best self in this life? Are you living in line with your values? Who offers me a road map if I feel lost on how to move forward in this way.

So I am looking for a teacher. Someone who can offer me wisdom and practices and forgiveness and love. Someone who can remind me of my truest self, so that I can practice being that self for my baby.

Some of my favorites...Tara Brach. Sharon Salzberg. Dan Harris. Richard Davidson. Judson Brewer. Megan Cowan. Vinny Ferraro. Oren Jay Sofer. Mary Oliver. Rumi.

I encourage you to do the same. Perhaps you have a religious leader in mind who can be that person for you. A yoga or meditation teacher. Someone you can go to in person or listen to their podcasts. Maybe it is a mentor or a close wizened friend or family member. It doesn’t matter who that person is, as long as they are holding space for you to reflect on your life.
